Welcome Ministers
In Numbers 1:48-53, God directed Moses - in the wilderness of Sinai - to organize what is determined to be the great Usher organization, to serve as watchmen over the Tabernacle of Testimony, and over all Vessels thereof, and over all things that belong to it, and to keep charge of the Tabernacle.
Four thousand and four years before the coming of Christ, men were serving in the same capacity, similar to that of the present day Usher. (See, for example, 2 Samuel, 18:24-25 - "The Watchman," 2 Kings, 22:4 - "Collector of Money," 1 Chronicles, 9:17-19; 21-22 - "Porters or Guards," and 1 Chronicles, 15:23-24 "Door Keepers.") Ambrose R. Clark of New York organized the first Usher board of modern day time in 1897. His purpose and procedures of organization became the foundation for modern church ushering.
Mission
Church Ushering is a service rendered to God. It is the art of making visitors and members feel comfortable and lending spiritual dignity to the whole church. We call ourselves "Ministers" because we believe that any position held on behalf of Our Lord, must first be blessed by the Lord, and installed by the church.
We use the word "Welcome" because it is a position that invites and recognizes the Lord’s people in love and kindness. Our responsibilities involve acting as a host for God and promoting public relations; also preparing for worship, greeting parishioners, providing seating assistance, recognizing our visitors, distributing information about our church, guiding the congregation to Communion in an orderly fashion, collecting tithes and offerings, comforting our Parish families in their time of bereavement during a funeral Mass, and most importantly, making each member feel welcomed.
As Welcome Ministers, we ask God to help us serve our members in a Christ-like manner, to make us prayerful and patient, helpful and understanding, so that we may radiate the joy that faith brings as we serve the needs of our members.
